Traditional acupuncture is a practice thousands of years old, using very thin needles inserted into specific points on the body. This practice is used to aid the body in healing, guiding blood flow and energy to afflicted areas, by addressing disharmonies within the body we can create balance within the body, mind and spirit to provide optimal healing conditions for many ailments including but not limited to, Insomnia, Chronic Pain, Fibromyalgia, IBS, Anxiety, Depression and Addictions.
TRADITIONAL ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is a complete system of medicine based on Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. It is used to assess, diagnose and treat many ailments. Acupuncture is administered to:
- alleviate pain
- promote, maintain, restore and improve overall health
- prevent disorder, imbalance or disease
- facilitate healing
- increase mobility
- promote an exceptional quality of life
“Treat the person, not the disease.”
Acupuncture refers to the stimulation of specific points, identified by anatomical and physiological standards, as well as by manual inspection and palpation. Stimulation of points creates a predictable physiological response including neurophysiological responses in the muscles, spinal cord and brain, as well as biochemical and hormonal responses in the body. These responses either change the body’s experience of symptoms, especially pain, or trigger the release of substances which influence the body’s internal regulation. This includes the administration of manual, mechanical, thermal and electro-therapeutic stimulation. As an integral part of the healthcare team, Acupuncturists may collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide a comprehensive treatment plan that best meets the patients needs and goals.
During the centuries of clinical practice and research, the functions and clinical effectiveness of each acupuncture point or combinations of points used in treating different diseases, have been studied in detail. In recent years these actions have been systematically studied and verified by modern scientific research. Currently, there are several forms of acupuncture practiced throughout the world. In the West, Sports medicine acupuncture is commonly practiced by Doctors of acupuncture, Medical Doctors, Physiotherapists and Chiropractors while Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture is practiced exclusively among Doctors of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctors. Doctors of Acupuncture have the option of being trained in both Western and Traditional acupuncture to provide their patients with the best of both worlds.
At The Healing Hive we strive to provide care that will produce the best possible patient outcomes and lasting results, sometimes this includes using both Traditional and Sports Medicine acupuncture in a single treatment.
“The common denominator in human illness is stress on the body and mind but, this affects each patient differently therefore each patient needs to be treated differently, there is no one size fits all treatment in Chinese medicine.”

After the initial assessment a treatment plan will be developed by the practitioner and treatment will begin the same day. The treatment may include:

Topical herbal therapy
Manual stretching, range of motion and/or Tui Na massage

Does Acupuncture hurt?
No, in fact, for the vast majority of patients they find Traditional acupuncture so calming that they often drift off into a comfortable state of relaxation during their appointment. Acupuncture needles are very fine, sometimes as small as a human hair. You may feel a mild ache once the needle has been inserted however this dissipates very quickly. Different sensations are felt when receiving Sports Medicine Acupuncture which we talk about more on the Sports Medicine page.
CONSULTATIONS
Consults can be used to determine what modalities might suit your health care needs best. This option is best suited to patients who are interested in herbal and diet therapy treatment alone without the use of acupuncture.
