WHAT IS ACUPRESSURE?
Acupressure is a form of manual treatment within the scope of Traditional Chinese Medicine that was developed over 5,000 years ago. Acupressure is administered by a Registered Acupuncturist. The practitioner will apply manual pressure with their thumbs or fingers to specific points on the body. These points are known as acu-points or ashi trigger points. These points are often noticeably tender when compared with surrounding tissue. Pressure is then applied with the aim of increasing blood and energetic flow as well as relieving localized tension. This localized tension constricts proper flow and movement in the body, creating pain and metabolic stagnation.
DOES ACUPRESSURE HURT?
No, in fact most patients find acupressure to be very enjoyable and often take the opportunity to shut their eyes and relax while the treatment is being administered.
“Where there is pain, there is stagnation and where there is stagnation there is pain.”
-Suwen, Huangdi Neijing
When studied, acupressure has been shown to stimulate the release of endorphins that mediate pain, while also relaxing the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is responsible for involuntary bodily functions like heart function, digestion and breathing, relaxing these systems can slow our breath and heart rate, while stimulating digestion. This state of neural relaxation is often referred to as “rest and digest” and when we are in this state, it provides optimal healing conditions for the body by reducing stress hormones.
Acupressure is administered to:
Alleviate Pain
Treat Nausea and Vomiting
Reduce Inflammation
Treat Migraines and Headaches
Relieve Anxiety, Stress and Fatigue
Treat Sinus Pressure
For many, Acupressure has become a staple in western life, if you have ever massaged between your thumb and forefinger to ease a headache or worn a “Sea Band” for nausea, you have experienced acupressure.
“Truly the greatest gift you have to give is that of your own self-transformation.”
